In my experience, the Apple rep who assisted me with the technology in the store also retrieved the product from inventory, rung it up (using a hand-held device), and had me on my way in minutes... And you are bang on cross-utilization of staff. We have also implemented this 'principle of three' in our retail outlets in India. If there are three people in queue, next counter is opened. The main reason behind the implemention of this promise is that every staff member is trained to work on billing station.Though, we do have some concerns on implementation but we try to fulfill this promise as regularly as possible.
